We all know that guns need to be cleaned to maintain good performance. In the process of gun cleaning, various tools will be used, such as jags, so today we will talk about how to properly use jags to clean guns.

Generally, cleaning starts with a brass jag designed to fit the barrel caliber. The jags themselves are shaped much like plungers, and the pointed tips hold the cleaning patch in place. A tight fit of the correct sized patch and jags will mean proper cleaning of the gun bore. The pressure you apply will remove any excess oil, solvent and dirt that may be in the barrel.

You will need a suitable cleaning kit, jags, solvent and oil for the cleaning job. You need to remove the gun to avoid any accident. Be sure to check twice to make sure it's uninstalled before starting the cleaning process.

Open the action or remove the bolts to start cleaning. If possible, you need to clean the gun from the breech to avoid any damage to the muzzle of the weapon.

When cleaning, first attach an appropriately sized jag to the cleaning rod, then place the patch and add a generous amount of cleaning solvent, then run the patch down the barrel and remove it as it passes through the muzzle. At this point, let the solvent sit in the barrel for a few minutes. This will loosen any dirt, grime and debris that may be inside.

After that replace the jags with a solvent brushed brush, then brush it along the barrel a few times, after removing the dirt, apply the jags and new patch with solvent and run down the barrel, then pull the patch back out of the muzzle Remove, repeat until the patch is clean.

Afterward, you can run some dry patches in the barrel in the same way to remove excess solvent. Then check the barrel for any obstructions and lubricate a patch with oil. This will protect the inside with a thin coat of oil to prevent rust.
