Anyone who owns a firearm knows that firearms need regular cleaning to maintain good performance. After the gun is used, all kinds of dirt will remain. If it is not cleaned in time, it will affect the use of the gun. Do you know what kind of dirt there is in general?
Almost all bullets, both center-fired and rim-fired, are made of lead cores with some type of copper sheathing around them. Even lead-free ammunition contains copper.
So the four most common types of dirt on firearms are the following.
• Carbon, which is created by the burning powder pushing the bullet from the chamber through the barrel
• Copper, caused by copper-plated bullets leaving residue in the barrel after firing
• Lead, caused by lead bullets leaving residue in the barrel after firing
• Plastic, caused by clumps of plastic in the cartridge case
It's impossible to find ammo that won't stain your gun. Black powder, most Berdan-primed and a lot of military surplus ammunition are corrosive. This means there are salts in the ammo’s primer. These salts will damage your gun. If you shoot a gun using corrosive ammunition, you should clean it after each shooting session. As far as the rules regarding the frequency of gun cleaning go, this is where it stops.
We know that we need to clean the guns, but there is no hard and fast rule when you should clean your guns. Some people clean their gun after every shooting session. Some others gun cleaning routine depends on the gun. But, no matter when you decide to clean your gun, the most important is to choose a great gun cleaning kit.
